Scouts Write Their Way

On October 30, 2021, members of the CI Scouts met to determine their ability to support the development of their website by establishing the writing skills that existed among themselves. The Writers’ Workshop was therefore held to gather information around the scouts‘ personal interests and talent, and their thoughts around the website content. After participating in a number of writing exercises, they discovered that writing may be done in various forms including precise, speaking notes from which they delivered a brief introduction of themselves, step-by-step instructions and recipes, a scientific journal, a report, a documentary, and a story /news item.

Descriptive writing, after brainstorming around the website content and elements, was another realized. Among the detailed list of items for the website, some of these were: CI Scouts’ history, something about the current situation, structure and organization, what they are doing, International connections, application form, videos, information about the colours and what they represent, Friends of Scouts page. They wanted the website to be interesting, inspiring, and attractive. Also membership logon, public and members’ pages. The Scouts were pleasantly surprised when they saw that a number of their ideas were similar to those shown on the site plan presented to them by the development team.

With a target launch date to coincide with the birthday of Lord Baden Powell on February 22nd, the scouts met on scheduled Saturday mornings to work on different aspects of the developing the website under the guidance of a website development team. Talent and interests identified included:

Chad Hernandez               – experience in building a website.

Chris Clarke                       – likes to be readily available as he finds it “hard to say no”

Jaeden Rankin                   – great on collecting information.

Yohannes Solomon          – wants to be a games developer.

Greg Black                          – designated Leader of the scouts’ WDD team

Joel Black                           – social interaction online.

Greg expressed thanks for the effort, putting the ideas together, acknowledging that it has been on the Scouts Executive Director’s list for a long time. Executive Director Winston Hayle said that he was excited. He thanked Liz Smith, member of the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens for holding the meeting and the BluJhADe team on board.
