Container Garden
The idea of a Container Garden at the Scout HQ was borne out of a session on seed germination. During the session Cub Scouts & Beaver Scouts were issued with kidney beans which they wrapped in wet paper and placed in jars. They were instructed to keep the paper moist & damp and observe process of seed germination which took place several days after. They were also and required to monitor & record he plants’ growth.
With no land space for farming plants were transferred from jars to pots and then to a grow box provided by parents.
Other seeds and seedlings were later introduced which created the need for more containers in which to grow them. It must be noted that the Seniors (Scouts & Venture Scouts) developed a keen interest in this aspect of the project which quickly led to its expansion.
The Scouts became quite creative & resourceful utilizing whatever discarded containers they could find which, otherwise, would have landed in the land-fill.
Items utilized are:
Grow Box, Flower Pots, Crates, Paint Buckets, Water-Meter Boxes, Heavy-duty Foam Chest.
Plants include:
Vegetables, Pumpkin, Gungo Peas, Callaloo, Spinach, Tomatoes, Red beans, Eskellion, Garlic
Medicinal Plant
Aloe Vera, Lemon Grass
Over the period of the pandemic at a time when the scheduled meeting sessions were suspended t senior Scouts & leaders took time-out to care for the plants. Such tasks included watering, weeding, fertilizing, replenishing soil, repairing grow box & chasing away chickens and iguanas (Smile).
Provision is made to acquire another grow boxes or two so as to expand the project. Consideration is also given to extending the project to other units in other districts.
Participants in this project gain recognition for their effort and will acquire credits for badge/s relating to this activity.
